    Book details

More than any other book of the last fifty years (and perhaps ever), the Harry Potter novels have captured the imagination of children and adults around the world. Yet no one has ever been able to unlock the secret of Harry's wild popularity . . . until now. Updated and expanded since its original publication as Looking for God in Harry Potter (and now containing final conclusions based on the entire series), How Harry Cast His Spell explains why the books meet our longing to experience the truths of life, love, and death; help us better understand life and our role in the universe; and encourage us to discover and develop our own gifts and abilities.

How Harry Casts His Spell was originally entitled Looking for God in Harry Potter and there's no doubt the original title describes far better what the book is about. Before you get the idea it's a collection of sermons hooked onto to Harry, let me say at once it's a terrific work of literary criticism.John Granger knows the Harry Potter books inside out and clearly loves them deeply. How Harry Casts His Spell is a wonderful uncovering of the deep spiritual truths that exist in any worthwhile work of literature. It's also a brave book; it was written when Harry Potter was the object of hatred among the more weird and wonderful of the religious Right, when loads of people "didn't get" what all the fuss was about because Harry was "just" a kids' book and were deeply scornful of those who did. John Granger's style is very readable and he does the reader the courtesy of assuming that not only are they are serious about wanting to understand why the Harry Potter saga has so many millions of admirers but are perfectly capable of taking on board some very serious themes.Obviously this book is for Harry Potter lovers and if you're interested in philosophy, ethics and religion, this book is for youHOW HARRY CAST HIS SPELL PB

This is an excellent intoduction to the Harry Potter books. If you want to know the answers to the meaning of the Potter novels and and why they are so successfull then look no further. John Granger writes an interesting and compelling read. It is written from a christian point of view, but do not let that put you off. The book explores Symbols, Names, Magic, Good and Evil, Life and Death, Alchemy, Spiritual content, and christian meaning, and a whole lot more.
